The best kind weekend activity…. amble along to the Wellington City Gallery and at a leisurely pace check out The Nita Gini Collection: Lauren Lysaght, on until the 15 August 2010 in the Hirschfeld Gallery.

Lauren Lysaght is presenting a unique gathering of ‘Crown Lynn’ objects, drawing on her grandmother Nita Gini’s collection. These objects are all beautifully constructed by the artist using cardboard, plaster of Paris and an array of other craft and found materials. Lysaght has also created the plinths and display furniture for the exhibition, using bizarre and highly theatrical materials including fake leopard-skin fabric, wood veneer and found items.

Go along and check it out. .. . you won’t be disappointed :-)

Yesterday i took an afternoon and had my first visit to the 2010 Wellington International Film Festival . . after sitting down and perusing the huuuggee selection on offer i landed on Exit Through the Gift Shop! (a banksy film) … so glad i did, it was my first Film festival visit for this season and now i think i’m going to be addicted! In this some what questionable/rainy weather theres nothing better to do than sit in a warm encapsulating cinema and be transported away somewhere. .

No matter what your idea of a good movie is there will without a doubt be something for you! So pop over to the website and check out your options. .. my next pick is La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet.

Shake off that rain, go out and take full advantage of the loveliness that Wellington is offering you up, we will be. :-)

Cameron Hockly is a boy…or..well hes a man now.  Cameron Hockly used to come and hang out at my flat.  Cameron Hockly writes beautiful poetry. Cameron Hockly is nice and now he gone on big travels overseas.

Madame Fancy Pants is lucky to have one of Cameron Hocklys poetry books in store again.

PUBLIC HOLIDAY

I have pulled your jersey up over your stomach, and your skin,

under my hands and mouth, is glowing against the no-colour of the couch.

It is the last part of a public holiday, grey with annual frequency

and slow, lethargic, it reclines.

We have found ourselves here, in the afternoon,

alone with the comfort of warmth and skin.

Books, phones and clothes lie on the ground,

clouds turn their backs to us, form a simple wall.

So about 2ish months ago I entered a competition online to win a weekends recording at TMV studios in Levin.  I was having a bit of a pants morning one morning, someone took the cute teapot stencil thingy from the Madame Fancy Pants door and you know..just a bad morning.  Until I came in to check my emails and received and email from Adele at TMV saying that I had one the recording session. yay! how so super exciting!

Well Dan, Paul and I finally got enough practice and organized our time tables and sorted out a weekend to head up north way to get some demos recorded.

On Saturday we got to TMV not knowing what to expect.  We were greeted by the lovely Adele and offered tea then shown around the studio. We met Dave (the owner and recording fellow) and then precoded to set up our gear.  Lucky for us (and them perhaps) that we are just a wee 3 piece, not like the 7 piece rock quest band on their way on Monday! hmm tinky teenage boys.  AHYWHO!

We got our instruments out, Paul set up his drums in a funny glass booth/wall and we were all mic’ed up.  I know now that the technical term for headphones is…cans.  Some kind of reference to playing phones with cans and string when you were little? Also we wanted the sound ‘dry’ as opposed to ‘wet’ (reverb and no reverb).  Well aint that dandy!

It took about 4 goes to get each of our 4 songs to a standard we were pretty happy with for a demo (gigs gigs! give us gigs!).  I haven’t heard myself singing to many times, so it took a little while to get used to hearing myself…I guess the way others do and to be honest by the end of the day I was a bit tired of hearing my own voice!! but more at ease with hearing it.

Then we got the songs mixed up a bit you know…so that all the instruments are at good levels and dont do any of that bad red lining stuff.

I found the day both exciting and a lil exhausting, but I think that the hot honey and whiskey drinks throughout the day certainly helped!   Im hoping that we will get to do more recording soon and come out with a super snappy sounding ep for y’all to enjoy.
